Freshly baked pizzas are a delight to bite into, and you’ll find a good selection of them at Blackjack Pizza, a restaurant chain that has been in the business since the 1980s. Aside from their specialty square pizzas, they offer a colorful variety of salads along with chicken wings and desserts. Most of their branches are in Colorado, where they started out. They also have branches now in Arizona, Wyoming, Montana, and Florida.
About Blackjack Pizza
If you’re wondering about the name, it’s not because the pizzas resemble playing cards or blackjack games are hosted inside the restaurants (although that would be interesting to see). Instead, the name “Blackjack Pizza” was inspired by Domino’s, the major pizza restaurant chain. Both blackjack and dominoes are games, and the owner wanted to convey that Blackjack Pizza can be an alternative to Domino’s. That’s pretty clever wordplay, but it goes even farther–Blackjack Pizza’s original slogan was “Finally, there’s a new game in town.”
Back when they started, Blackjack Pizza made quite a splash in Colorado because they were the only major company delivering pizzas in the state. It’s hard to think back to a time when pizza delivery didn’t exist, but yes, you usually had to drop by the store to get a box (no couch potato pizza-eating!). As of 2022, they’ve boomed to 40+ branches across five states.

Blackjack Pizza definitely counts as fast food, but they don’t follow the stereotype because many of their menu items and ingredients are fresh and handmade. It’s not just their pizzas–even their salad dressings and breads are crafted by hand! Here are some of their menu highlights:
Pizzas
Unlike most pizza chains, Blackjack Pizza’s specialty pizzas are baked in square pans. However, some branches also have round pizzas that you can customize. Gluten-free crust is sometimes even available if you want to avoid the wheat! Should you choose to go the DIY route instead of ordering their specialty pizzas, there’s a wide range of toppings available, including pepperoni, sausage, beef, mushroom, red onions, and both black and green olives. You’ll also have to select the sauce (Original Red, Olive Oil & Garlic, BBQ Sauce, 505 Green Chile) as well as the cheese (Extra Cheese, Cheddar, Feta).
Salads
Blackjack Pizza has several salads for counterbalance if you want to get more veggies in. These aren’t the usual salad sides where a bunch of lettuce is just drizzled with dressing in a small cup–they’re actually substantial salads with plenty of other ingredients aside from the lettuce base. For example, their Greek salad has a hefty serving of tomatoes, beets, and olives, while their Chicken Caesar Salad has several chunky chicken breast strips.
Pizza Desserts
While Blackjack Pizza also has cinnamon breadsticks and ice cream, their most attention-catching sweet menu item would have to be their pizza desserts. Pizza desserts have been trending for a while, but they’re still considered as strange because, well… You’re usually supposed to put cheese on your pizza, right, not caramel or chocolate? Still, warm pizza dough can make for a good base for a dessert. Blackjack Pizza mostly sticks with chocolate flavors in its pizza desserts, which are available in three varieties: Chocolate Chip, Brownie, and S’mores.
