Can’t get enough of Tex-Mex food? If you live in the South, you might already be familiar with Uncle Julio’s, a Mexican restaurant chain that has been around for decades. All of the Tex-Mex staples are here–fajitas, nachos, and tacos, to name a few. Although the prices are higher than the usual fast food go-to, their menu remains affordable.
One reason why customers keep going back here is Uncle Julio’s uses fresh ingredients and supposedly makes their food from scratch. This gives their menu items a signature flavor since they have their own recipes for sauces and dips as well.
The recipes are also authentic–Uncle Julio’s first branch was launched in Texas, the home of Tex-Mex food. Since their opening in 1986, they’ve expanded to more than 40 restaurants across 11 states, with most of these states in the South. You can find Uncle Julio’s at Texas, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Virginia, and Wisconsin.
Opening hours vary per location, but Uncle Julio’s is generally open from 11 a.m. up to 10 or 11 p.m. Delivery and to-go options are available. Still, dine-in can be an interesting experience because you can watch the chefs in the open kitchen or have your guacamole made right by your table.

Uncle Julio’s Specialties
Uncle Julio’s has a well-rounded menu that covers appetizers, Tex-Mex classics, and desserts. Whether you’re hoping for quesadillas, guacamole, fajitas, or carne asada, you’ll spot them all on the menu. Fajitas are the highlight, but they also have an interesting selection of grilled food, from camarones to pechuga de pollo. Since it’s a family-friendly restaurant, they also offer a few food items for kids, including “kidsadillas” and chicken tenders.
Here are their menu standouts:
Fajitas
Fajitas are the bestsellers at Uncle Julio’s. Their chicken and steak fajitas are at the top of the list, but they have steak, shrimp, and veggie fajitas too. The meat for their fajitas is mesquite-grilled, which gives it a distinct smoky yet sweet flavor. Each fajita comes with pico, lettuce, guacamole, sour cream, Mexican rice, and warm tortillas.
Margaritas
Uncle Julio’s may be a Mexican restaurant, but they also made sure to beef up their drinks section. The margarita and beer options are bar-worthy. Choose from more than 10 margaritas that are all hand-crafted. Their Pineapple Margarita could be a great add-on to your dinner, with ingredients like jalapeno and agave tequila. For less adventurous choices, they serve up frozen margaritas. If you’d rather pass on the alcohol, you can go for a mango passion lemonade drink instead.
Chocolate Piñata
The chocolate piñata at Uncle Julio’s would probably have to be one of the most festive desserts around. You literally get a chocolate shell that’s hanging from a metal frame. To get started, you have to break it with a bat. It’s filled inside with churros and sliced fresh fruits such as pineapple and berries. Of course, churros aren’t meant to be eaten on their own–the pinata is accompanied by whipped cream and raspberry, chocolate, and caramel sauces.
